How YIT harmonized operations across a merged organization with a unified management system
After the merger of YIT and Lemminkäinen, the company needed a way to align processes and operating models across the organization. With QPR EnterpriseArchitect, YIT developed the GRIP management system to support employees and guide operations consistently across the company
Key outcomes
-
Harmonized operating models across the merged organization
-
One management system connecting processes, guidelines and documentation
-
Reduced operational silos between business unit
-
Clear guidance for employees in daily work
The Challenge:
Aligning operations after the merger of two large construction companies
The merger of YIT and Lemminkäinen in 2018 created one of the largest construction companies in Northern Europe. While the merger strengthened the company’s capabilities, it also introduced operational complexity.
Different business units had their own processes, documentation, and ways of working. To operate efficiently as one organization, YIT needed to harmonize practices and create a shared operational framework.
Without a unified management system, employees often needed to navigate different tools, guidelines, and documentation structures.
“The best thing that YIT and QPR cooperation has generated is that together we have been able to innovate how the management system can best lead operations from the user point of view. We have managed to create a new twist to a traditional management system through our joint efforts.”

Owner of the YIT GRIP Project

The company builds residential buildings and urban areas, as well as schools, hospitals, commercial and industrial facilities such as data centers. YIT also delivers critical infrastructure projects including railways, bridges, tunnels, and other essential transport solutions.
YIT employs approximately 4,100 professionals, and its 2025 revenue was €1.8 billion. The company is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki stock exchange.
The solution
Building the GRIP management system with QPR EnterpriseArchitect
To harmonize operations, YIT partnered with QPR Software to develop the GRIP Management System, built with QPR EnterpriseArchitect.
The system models processes, interfaces, and operational practices across the organization, providing employees with clear guidance on how work should be performed.
GRIP combines:
-
Process descriptions across core and support functions
-
Operational guidelines and documentation
-
Standard best practices and checkpoints
-
Access to templates, instructions, and tools
The solution was implemented using QPR Cloud Service and integrated into YIT’s SharePoint environment, allowing employees to access processes and documentation directly within their daily workflow.
Continuous development and collaboration
The GRIP management system continues to evolve through close collaboration between YIT, QPR, and other technology partners.
Development follows an agile approach based on the SAFe framework, with improvements implemented in two-week sprint cycles and continuous feedback collected from users.
“The cooperation between QPR and other suppliers has functioned very well. The teams work hard to find the best solutions for YIT. Every sprint results in value-creating features delivered according to the planned schedule.”
